I finally got the piece uploaded that I did for my coworkers. I might be doing another one like it, somebody else wants one. It was extremely fun to make, I'm looking foreword to another commission. I got some other stuff I should try to scan in soon, however I must just end up taking photographs of them. Gotta work with what you have on you sometimes, and I don't have a scanner. I'll toss more at you later.

I am not sure how the original artist did that work, I was able to find a wallpaper I liked back in 11th grade and painted my own acrylic rendition of their (I assume Photoshopped) work.

Now I have the experience with Photoshop that I can manipulate images whatever way I want. The way I do this sort of project is I will find a photograph I like and, using Photoshop, color over the darkest areas (in a new layer) in one shade while leaving the lightest untouched.

You have to pick and choose what areas you want to leave in and which ones you don't, and at times bend the rules to have a recognizable face. While there are filters that will change contrasts and lighting, I don't use them much except to accent an area I am having trouble with.

I can send you a psd of a Bob Marley piece I'm working on to see how I work if you like.

Oh, don't worry. I've done it myself before, I was curious what method you used. Sometimes I'll just apply a threshold filter after tweaking the contrast, but I don't like leaving it entirely to the computer. Alternatively I like doing it entirely by hand in my sketchbook, it turns out a little more aesthetically pleasing that way I think. That's how I like doing my stencils these days.

Yea, I definitely think that there's something lost to people who go straight into digital work without starting on something analog. There's definitely a lot that can be done in the digital medium, but much of the best learning and innovation is done by putting pencil to paper. Then using those lessons to make your digital art as good as possible.

Totally. Personally, I combine a lot of digital and hand made work. I think some of the best digital work comes from people who have at least been trained in the traditional method. When you get down to it, I think it's that a lot of subconscious choices happen when you do work with your hands, and that it's hard to do that when working digitally.
